Former Liberian rebel leader and president Charles Taylor has
disappeared. Quite frankly, this comes as no surprise. Taylor is a powerful man, and was said to be interfering in Liberian affairs even while in exile in Nigeria. And one can also understand Nigeria's reluctance to give him up. The conditions of his exile were for Liberia to make a fresh start. He wouldn't have agreed to go into exile if he knew he'd be charged for alleged war crimes, and Nigeria would not have wanted to be the country known for arresting suspected African war criminals. A real muddle.

It's a bit like the rescue of Norman Kember from his inexplicably 'disappeared' captors the other day. Some arrangement was reached to let the cat slink quietly away. Charles Taylor is worse than a war criminal though, and I hope he gets his, somewhere, somehow.
