The Indy and Guardian have printed fairly well researched obituaries of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Maccido Abubakar, who died in Sunday's plane crash.
The Indy's seems slightly fuller than the
Guardian's, with a testimony from
Professor Murray Last (who got his PhD at UI).

Very touching eulogy by the papers. To remember with fondness the jihad of Othman Dan Fodio is an aberration to me. In my post about my heritage, the 'war of horses' was set around this period and it led to terrible upheavel and much pain. On the other hand, Maccido's role in stemming the tide of violence towards the christians is to be lauded.
